MARQUETTE, Mich. – Wilbert O. Yon, 89, of Hulbert, formerly of Saginaw, died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette.
He was born on Sept. 4, 1923, in Sault Ste. Marie, the son of Osiber and Ida (Van Norman) Yon.
Wilbert proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was united in marriage to Ella Mae Near in Saginaw.
Wilbert was employed by the Flint Board of Education as superintendent of maintenance.
He enjoyed hunting, arm wrestling and dancing. Wilbert especially loved spending time with his family and friends and was known for his great sense of humor.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 393 and the Eagles Club Post 3701.
Wilbert is survived by a daughter, Terry Wetherbee, Hulbert; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; four brothers, Leslie (Beverly), Tapiola, Gerald, Berkley, Greg (Domicella), Wakefield, and Douglas, Royal Oak; a sister, Helen Leazier; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ella, in 1993; and a brother, Robert, on Jan. 6, 1973.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Oct. 30, at the W.L. Case Funeral Home in Saginaw.
Committal services, full military rites and burial took place in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Saginaw.
