Walter Albert Robert Krueger, 91, of Wakefield, passed away Saturday, April 2, 2011, in Wakefield, from complications of pneumonia, surrounded by his loving family. He was a resident of Gogebic Medical Care Facility for the past five years while battling Alzheimer's disease.
Walter was born July 4, 1919, at home in the town of Corning, Wis., son of the late Bernhard and Bertha (Radloff) Krueger.
On July 2, 1941, he was married to Irene Voigt at St. Paul's Lutheran Chapel in Iowa City, Iowa.
Walter was a self-employed logging contractor until 1976. He was then employed at Connor Forest Industries as a heavy equipment operator for the next five years. He and his wife, Irene, then traveled the country for three years. In 1989, Walter returned to Connor Forest Industries until retiring in 1994.
He was a member of Our Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bessemer.
Walter is survived by a son, Carl Krueger (Jane Elmblad), L'Anse; a daughter, Ellen (Les) Schneck, Wakefield; three grandchildren, Robin Krueger and Kerri (Mike) Koskinen, both of L'Anse, and Josh Schneck, Wakefield; three special great-grandchildren, Paige, Allison and Kellen Koskinen, all of L'Anse; four sisters-in-law, Vila Krueger, Merrill, Wis., Elaine Draves, Marathon, Wis., Dorothy Voigt, Merrill, Wis., and Arlene Voigt, Wausau, Wis.; his brother-in-law, Gerald (Geraldine) Voigt, Hamburg, Wis.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents, Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Irene, of 67 years who passed away on May 10, 2009; his daughter-in-law, Bobbi Kaye; three brothers, twins Lester and Edgar, and Herbert Krueger; three brothers-in-law, Elmer, Sheldon Sr. and James Voigt; and his sister-in-law, Evelyn Krueger.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 5, at 2 p.m., at Our Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church, with the Rev. David Stevens officiating.
Family and friends may call at the church on Tuesday from noon until the time of service.
Pallbearers will be his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Committal services and interment will be Wednesday, April 6, at noon, at Maple Grove Cemetery in the town of Maine, Wis.
