Vernie L. Sampson
WAKEFIELD, Mich. – Vernie L. Sampson, 86, of 601 Sampson Road, Wakefield, passed away Friday evening, Jan. 13, 2012, in Wakefield.
She was born March 27, 1925, in Masonville, daughter of the late Felix Russell and Pearl (Russell) Shirkey. Vernie attended Marenisco School.
During World War II, she moved to Ann Arbor and found employment as a "Rosie the Riveter" performing welding on aircraft.
In 1946, Vernie was united in marriage to Eugene Sampson. They were blessed with three children. Eugene passed away in an automobile accident on July 5, 1958.
On June 6, 1959, she married Donald Sampson. Together they raised her three children and were blessed with a daughter.
Vernie was a meticulous homemaker, who excelled in cooking and baking, and enjoyed caring for her husband, children and grandchildren, despite her disability.
As sweet and loving as Vernie could be, she also had a feisty side, which all her family loved.
Vernie was a member of All Saints Lutheran Church in Wakefield. She liked to play Bingo with her mother-in-law and friends.
She was very proud of her family, as they were of her, and will be missed very much.
Surviving are her loving husband of 53 years, Donald; a son, Eugene (Kathy), and their children, Eugenia, Jennifer, Michael and Ashley; two daughters, Nadine Roebuck (Jose), and her children, Deanna, Michele, Nathan and Tia, Christine Bergquist (Dean), and her children, Chad, Tyler and Kyle; numerous great-grandchildren; a brother, Alan Shirkey; three sisters, Jean (Fred) LaBean, Beverly (Larry) Jackson and Norma Hansen; her brothers- and sisters-in-law, Ruth Cox, Robert "Bob" (Paulette) Sampson, Karen (Gene) LaCosse, Shirley (Harold) Aschenbrenner, Elaine Rivas (Joe) and Sharon Shirkey; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and first husband, she was preceded in death by her beloved son, Michael, on Dec. 1, 1968; a brother, Calvin Shirkey Sr.; a sister, Lorraine Burton; and her brother-in-law, Kenneth Sampson.
Funeral services and burial will take place at Lakeside Cemetery in the spring.
The family would like to thank everyone at the Gogebic Medical Care Facility for their kindness and loving care that was given to Vernie over the past two years.
