Thomas Dale
Merle Cousineau
July 29, 1950 – February 2, 2026
BERGLAND, Mich. - Thomas Dale Merle Cousineau, 75, of Bergland, passed away on Monday, Feb. 2, 2026, at Aspirus St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth, Minnesota.
Thomas was born on July 29, 1950, in Lansing, Michigan, the son of Merle and Lila (Nostrant) Cousineau. He lived a life defined by service, family and quiet strength.
Thomas dedicated 30 years of service as a deputy sheriff with the Ontonagon County Sheriff's Office, where he was known for his steady demeanor, fairness and deep sense of responsibility to his community.
Above all else, Thomas was a devoted family man. He was married to the former Mary D. Sikkila for 52 years, and together they built a life centered on love, loyalty and togetherness. He was a proud father to Tom Cousineau and Misty Hasenberg; and a loving grandfather to JT, Tyler and Jasmyn Hasenberg, and Tommy and Connor Cousineau. His joy only grew with the arrival of his great-grandchildren, Cherish and Max, whom he cherished deeply.
Thomas is further survived by a niece, Nikki Walden; many extended family members and friends; and his beloved Yorkie, Cooper, who was a constant companion and brought him great comfort and joy.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Jan Walden; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Wesley and Geraldine Sikkila.
Thomas loved the outdoors and could often be found hunting and fishing, pursuits that brought him peace and joy. He had an exceptional amount of patience, especially when teaching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren—always taking the time to show, explain and encourage. He enjoyed playing games throughout his life, from pinball machines and Atari in earlier years to PlayStation later in life, where he especially enjoyed killing zombies, something that continued to bring him joy even in his later years.
Thomas will be remembered as a man of remarkable patience, quiet humor and unwavering devotion to his family. His presence was steady and comforting, and his lessons—spoken and unspoken—will live on through those he loved. His legacy of service, love and patience will never be forgotten.
A small family ceremony was held on Feb. 6, in Bruce Crossing.
