IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Sonia Anne Bergquist, 81, of Ironwood Township passed away on June 6, 2026.
Sonia, daughter of Louis Caruso and Mary (Leigh) Caruso Zasadni, was born on July 12, 1944, in Ilfracombe, North Devon, England. She was raised in Ironwood and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School with the class of 1962.
She married the love of her life, A. Chris Bergquist, on Nov. 30, 1963, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on March 23, 2020. Sonia worked beside her husband for 37 years as they owned and operated Handsome Prints. As an active member in her community, she was a past member of the Gogebic Range Jaycettes and Ironwood Chamber of Commerce and also volunteered at St. Vincent DePaul, the Historic Ironwood Theatre, Gogebic Range Players, Theatre North, and the Klassic Kruisers Car Club. Along with her husband, she was a founding member of Festival Ironwood.
Sonia loved her family, the area she lived in and the people who were a part of her life. She is survived by her loving daughter, Christian Anne Bergquist (Sandy Nyman); her amazing sister, Lisa Olson; her brothers, Rick (Rose), Dennis (Lauren) and Eric (April) Caruso; her sister-in-law, Judith Caruso; her brothers- and sisters-in-law, Nik (Judy) and George Bergquist, Carol Bergquist and Judy Bergquist; and many dear nieces and nephews, including her special great niece, Cori Fruik. She is further survived by her special friends, Gene and Gail Clemens, Linda and Sue Gembolis, and Terry Cvengros.
Besides her parents and husband, Sonia was preceded in death by her infant son, A. Chris Bergquist Jr.; her twin sister, Mary Lou, at birth; her godson, J.R. Bergquist; her stepfather, Stan Zasadni; her brothers, Louis, Sam and Domenic Caruso; her sisters-in-law, Susie and Susan Caruso; brothers- and sisters-in-law, JoAnn Bergquist, Bob Bergquist, Jon and Bobbie Bergquist, Karl Bergquist, G.I. Bergquist and Merrie Giannunzio; and her mother- and father-in-law, George and Gertrude Bergquist.
In honor of Sonia’s memory, donations can be made to HOPE Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 261, Ironwood,MI 49938.
Per Sonia’s wishes, graveside services will be held at Riverside Cemetery on Saturday, June 20 at 11:30 a.m., with the Very Rev. Brian C. Gerber officiating. A luncheon to honor the lives of A. Chris and Sonia Bergquist will be held at Rigoni’s Bar in Ironwood following the services.
The family would like to thank Dr. Jim Rocco, Aspirus Ironwood Hospital, Northwest Cancer Center, Aspirus St. Luke’s and St. Mary’s for the wonderful care and compassion given to Sonia during her 10-month valiant battle with lung cancer.
Funeral services are entrusted to Jerald Rocco, owner and operator of Lakeside Memorial Chapel Inc., Wakefield.
