BESSEMER, Mich. – Shirley M. (Lassila) Hautala, 81, of Bessemer, passed away Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, at her home, surrounded by her loving family, after a brief illness.
She was born on May 25, 1931, in Ironwood, the daughter of Herman and Ivy (Hautanen) Lassila. Shirley was very proud of her Finnish heritage. After graduating from Luther L. Wright High School in 1949, she earned an associates degree from the Milwaukee School of Business.
On Dec. 1, 1956, Shirley was united in marriage to Jack E. Hautala at Zion Lutheran Church in Ironwood by the Rev. A.L. Maki.
She and her husband were the founders of Hautala Distributing Co. Inc. For many years, they enjoyed wintering in Zephyrhills, Fla.
Shirley was a faithful member of All Saints Lutheran Church in Wakefield, its circles and the church council.
For more than 35 years, she cheerfully volunteered for Aspirus Grand View Hospital Auxilary.
Shirley is survived by five children, Jeffrey (Roberta) and Jock (Julie), both of Wakefield, Michael (Patricia), Ramsay, Beth (Rolf) Hendrickson, Heidelberg, Germany, and Peggy (Frank) Austin, Gladstone; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; a sister, Eileen Prosser, Oceanside, Calif.; three sisters-in-law, Julie Schlie, Prescott, Ariz., and Geraldine Hautala and Irene (Donald) Mildren, both of Ironwood; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jack, on Dec. 7, 2010; a sister, Junice Lassila; and a brother, Reynold Lassila.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 19, at 10:30 a.m., preceded by visitation at 8:30 a.m., at All Saints Lutheran Church in Wakefield, with the Rev. Bill Jacobson officiating.
A reception will be held in the church fellowship hall following the service.
Committal services and interment will be held Friday, at 1:15 p.m., in Hillcrest Cemetery, Bessemer.
Pallbearers will be Alex, Nathan, Dane, Stuart, Henri and Samuel. Honorary pallbearer will be Seth.
