Ronald D. 'Ron' Schwartz

BESSEMER, Mich. – Ronald D. "Ron" Schwartz, 60, of Johnson Road, Bessemer, passed away Friday, Sept. 2, 2011, at his home, after a two-year battle with cancer.

He was born on Oct. 25, 1950, in Wakefield, the son of Bruce and Florence (Hill) Schwartz. Ron attended Bessemer schools and graduated in 1968 from A.D. Johnston High School.

He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in November 1969 and proudly served his country until retirement in June 1989, reaching the rank of Gunnery Sergeant.

Ron was an aircraft mechanic and served several tours of duty overseas, mainly in the Far East.

During his service, Ron and his family were stationed in Mt. Clemens, Mich., Camp Pendleton, Calif., and Marietta, Ga., before moving back to his hometown of Bessemer in 1990.

On Jan. 26, 1974, he married Rebecca Spurgeon in Morgantown, W. Va. Together they raised their three children.

Ron was an avid hunter and fishermen and loved to watch pro football.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 37 years, Becky; two sons, Adam, Lady Lake, Fla., and Bruce (fiancé Stephanie Saunders), Leesburg, Fla.; a daughter, Heather, Berkley; a grandson, Gabriel, Lady Lake; five brothers, Richard (Bonnie), Ironwood, and Gene (Brenda), Randy (Renee), Kurt and James (Deanna), all of Bessemer; three sisters, Charlotte Hoffner, Wendy Komula and Paula (Ross) Solberg, all of Bessemer; his mother-in-law, Lillian Spurgeon, Morgantown; two brothers-in-law, James R. Spurgeon, Downers Grove, Ill., and Joseph (Maureen) Spurgeon, Palm City, Fla.; two aunts, Val Higgins (Eino), Hurley, Wis., and Beverly (Ken) Wuorinen, Bloomington, Minn.; three uncles, Lloyd (Marilyn) Hill, Bessemer, Wilbert Hill, Lake Gogebic, and Ken Maki, Hurley; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and many dear friends.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Carol Schwartz Conley; his father-in-law, Arnold Spurgeon; and Uncle Earl and Aunt Evelyn Hill, Aunt Margie Maki and Aunt Jenny Hill.
Per Ron's wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be military rites at a later date.
