February 17, 1948 – February 22, 2026
WAKEFIELD, Mich. - Roger John Koivu, 78, of Wakefield, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2026, after a lengthy illness.
Roger was born on Feb. 17, 1948, at Divine Infant Hospital in Wakefield, son of the late Onni and Irene Koivu. He attended Wakefield High School and graduated in 1966.
Roger proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force for four years, serving as a helicopter mechanic in the Vietnam War. He then worked and retired as a heavy equipment operator from White Pine Copper Mine and Bessemer Plywood Company.
On April 17, 1971, Roger married Margaret "Peg" Slanina in Tacoma, Washington. He loved being a husband, father, and his most prized title, Papa Rog.
Roger loved his animals and the outdoors. He made many happy memories with the kids camping out at Lake Gogebic, Presque Isle and Marion Lake over the years. Roger was the proud pool man for his kids and grandkids for more than 40 years.
Roger is survived by his wife, Margaret "Peg;" three children, Laura (Wayne Cronkright) Novascone, Lisa (Jeremy) Spencer and James (Sara) Koivu; his beloved grandchildren, Ciara (Dylan) Vannatter, Bethany (Jared Lancaster) Novascone, Keely Spencer, Isabella Novascone, Ryan Koivu, Killian Spencer and Emily Koivu. He also leaves behind three brothers, Jerry, James and Ryan Koivu, all on Lake Gogebic; and his son-in-law, Scott Novascone.
The family acknowledges with heartfelt appreciation the care and attention provided to Roger by Dr. James Rocco and Regional Hospice.
A private ceremony will be held at a later date.
Jerald Rocco, owner and manager of Lakeside Memorial Chapel Inc., in Wakefield, is assisting the family with arrangements. Condolences may be expressed online at lakesidememorialchapel.com.
