Richard L. 'Dick' Doney

WAKEFIELD, Mich. – Richard L. "Dick" Doney, 76, a lifelong resident of Wakefield, passed away Friday, Sept. 2, 2011, at the Gogebic Medical Care Facility in Wakefield, following a brave battle with cancer.

He was born on Dec. 11, 1934, in Wakefield, the son of Edward Richard and Beatrice (Windberg) Doney. Dick graduated from Wakefield High School with the class of 1952.

On May 7, 1955, he married Ethel Stoole in Waukegan, Ill.

Dick proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War aboard the aircraft carrier USS Hornet.

His memberships included All Saints Lutheran Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9084.

Dick's passion for fishing, hunting and telling great stories came only second to his love for the Detroit Tigers. He had a great sense of humor and was always ready with a joke to make you laugh.

Dick was employed by White Pine Copper Refinery and then worked at Great Lakes Gas Transmission Co., before retiring in 1995.

He is survived by three sons, Gerald (Rhonda), West Suffield, Conn., Gary, Ely, Minn., and Ricky (Paula), Simsbury, Conn.; four daughters, Cathy Nasi (Steve), Ironwood, Cindy (Dave) Maslanka, De Pere, Wis., Carol Dollar (Jim), Collinsville, Okla., and Carrie (Bryon) Flohaug, Wakefield; 12 grandchildren, Nick and Dave Hoogeworf, Azure and Dakota Doney, Hannah and Vanessa Nasi, Keith and Nicole Doney, Ryan Maslanka, Jennifer and Christi Morrison and Justin Flohaug; two brothers, Donny (Donna) and Eddie (Maxine); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Ethel, on Oct. 12, 2008; and a brother, David.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, at All Saints Lutheran Church, 1202 Putnam Blvd., Wakefield, with the Rev. Bill Jacobson officiating.


Burial in Lakeside Cemetery, with a military graveside service under the auspices of American Legion Post 11 and VFW Post 9084 Honor Guard.

Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday until the time of the service at the church, with the honor guard beginning at 10:15 a.m.

A reception will be held in the church fellowship hall.
