Obituary

IRONWOOD, Mich. - Phyllis M. Sunie, 89, of 5135 MacDonald Lane in Ironwood, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2025, surrounded by her family.

Phyllis was born at home on April 6, 1935, to John and Ione (Nelson) Gormley. She attended Hurley schools. At the age of 51, Phyllis went to night school and was very proud of earning her high school diploma.

She married Ernest Sunie in 1953. Phyllis worked at Simpson Electric Company in Mercer for 30 years, Westgate Nursing Home in Ironwood for 10 years, and - together with her sisters Evelyn and Verna - operated Sister Catering for eight years.

Surviving are her daughters, Carol Anderson of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Suzanne Carlson of Ironwood; sister, Evelyn, whom she raised from age 10; grandchildren, Ashley (John) Keenan and Megan (James) Jens, both of Milwaukee, Casey (Kassi) Carlson and Marissa (Blayne) Anderson of Ironwood; niece, Tiffany (Breck) Fulks of Ironwood; six great-grandchildren, 25 nieces and nephews; sisters, Mary (Hank) Pospeck of Minnesota, Lois White of Texas, Evelyn (Donald) Hakkinen of Ironwood; brothers, Wayne (Shirley) Gormley, Tim (Liz) Gormley of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin; brother-in-law, George Wesa; sister-in-law, Elinor (Jim) Meunier of Ironwood; and special cousin, Shirley Selin of Bessemer.


Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ernest Sunie; sisters, Jean Agrey, Marcella Rhiem, Verna Wesa, Carol Gormley, Hazel Gormley and Elaine Maderas; and brothers-in-law, Charles Rhiem, Roy White and Allen Maderas.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 12, with Pastor Rick Schwake presiding. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. with funeral to follow at 11 a.m. at Ironwood Wesley United Methodist Church.

Phyllis' family extends heartfelt thanks to Dr. Jim Rocco and Nurse Joanne of Rocco Medical Clinic in Wakefield for their exceptional care over the years, as well as Aspirus Home Health and Wound Clinic. Special thanks are also extended to Jerald Rocco of Lakeside Memorial Chapel for his compassionate guidance during this difficult time. Additionally, the family is deeply grateful to Phyllis' sister, Evie, for her tireless and selfless care, as well as Phyllis' neighbors, who always watched out for her, offering their help and support whenever it was needed.


Phyllis will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
