Obituary

WAKEFIELD, Mich. – Marie Joyce (Nora) Cormier, 91, a long-time resident of Wakefield, died peacefully surrounded by her beloved family in Minneapolis, Minn. on Jan. 8, 2018.

Marie was born on March 28, 1926 in Wakefield, the second daughter to Joseph and Mary (Delmet) Nora of Iron Mountain, Michigan.

Marie graduated from Iron Mountain High School (1944), received her nurses training at St. Mary's Mercy in Gary, Ind., and graduated with a Nursing Degree (RN) from Loyola University (1948). Marie worked at Lutheran Deaconess Hospital in Chicago, Ill. for several years prior to marriage and moving to Wakefield. Marie continued her career as a Nursing Supervisor at Divine Infant Hospital (1963-1976) and as Director of Nursing at the Gogebic Medical Care Facility (1978-1986).

On Sept. 17, 1955, at Immaculate Conception in Iron Mountain, she married James Keith Cormier of Wakefield, where they made their home and raised two children.

Through the years, Marie actively participated in several community organizations, including Grandview Auxiliary, GARC, VFW Post 9084 Auxiliary, Immaculate Conception Guild, and the Paisano Club of Upper Michigan. Marie enjoyed many interest: She like to travel, shop, and go the the theatre. She was an avid reader of novels, fictional mysteries, and cookbooks. She was extremely proud of her children and nieces, and their families, traveling frequently to be with them.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Joseph and Mary Nora, sister, Nona Beauchamp, and husband, Jim Cormier.

Marie is survived by her children James (Madonna) Cormier and Joyce (James) Clifford, of Ham Lake, Minn.; grandchildren Jennifer (Matthew) Turner, Jaimie (Torrey) Gavin, and Julia Clifford; and great grandchildren Cecilia and Donovan Turner. Marie also leaves behind two nieces who were like daughters to her - Simone Kriegl and Mary Jo (Mike) Momont; grandnieces and grandnephews Joe (Laura) Kriegl, John (Nicole) Kriegl, Aundrea (John) Coon, Jaclynn (Jason) Kreider, Michael (Jamie) Momont, Christopher Momont, and Elizabeth (Joshua) Thomas; and sixteen great grandnieces and great grandnephews.

Out of respect for her wishes, cremation has take place. Funeral Mass will take place on Friday, Jan. 26, at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Wakefield, with Fr. Dominic Agyapong as the celebrant. Visitation at the church will begin at 10 a.m., one hour prior to the funeral. Following the funeral, hospitality will be served at VFW Post 9084. Private interment will be at Cemetery Park in Iron Mountain on Jan. 27.
