Maria E. Verbos' Obituary
IRONWOOD, Mich. – Maria E. Verbos, 82, a lifelong resident of Wakefield, died Friday, Feb. 3, 2012, in Ironwood.
She was born on Dec. 31, 1929, in Bruce Crossing, the daughter of Elmer and Lillian (Pikkumaki) Mars. Maria attended Wakefield schools.
On Feb. 21, 1968, she married Stephen R. Verbos in Crystal Falls.
Maria worked for Indianhead Mountain Corporation and Kodiak Corporation.
She enjoyed the cottage on Langford Lake with her husband, looking for agates on the Lake Superior shoreline with her girlfriends, and going to rummage sales. Maria was a local artist with pictures sold around the area and northern Wisconsin.
She will be greatly missed by her family.
Maria is survived by two sons, Loren (Cecelia) Jakkola, Bessemer, and John Jaakkola, Wakefield; three grandchildren, Kelly Giackino, Ironwood, Bryon Jakkola, White Bear Lake, Minn., and Jason Jakkola, Luxemburg, Wis.; six great-grandchildren; and four nieces and two nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Stephen, on March 9, 2007; and a brother, Dale Mars of Bessemer.
A funeral service will be held at Lakeside Cemetery in the spring.
