Margarete Helene
Behr
December 9, 1933 – December 3, 2024
With profound sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Margarete Helene (Müller) Behr, 90, on December 3, 2024, in Wakefield, Michigan. Margarete passed away serenely, listening to Ave Maria with her son lovingly holding her hand.
Born on December 9, 1933, in Eltville am Rhein, Germany, to Paul and Elizabeth (Stritter), Margarete's early years were marked by resilience and a passion for helping others. After completing her education, she became a registered nurse (Krankenschwester) in Germany.
In 1959, Margarete embarked on a courageous journey with her husband, Henry Georg Behr, to start a new life in the United States. Settling in Freeport, Long Island, New York, they built a warm and loving home where they raised their two children, Vivianne and George. Margarete worked for the Town of Freeport as a meter maid and crossing guard, earning the admiration of her community—though perhaps not from those who received her tickets!
Margarete was a devoted wife to Henry until his passing in 2018, a beloved mother, and the cherished matriarch of her family. Her strength, wisdom, and unwavering dedication were a guiding light to all who knew her.
Beyond her professional and familial roles, Margarete was a woman of deep faith and a kind heart. She loved gardening, cooking, and sharing stories of her homeland. Her life was a testament to hard work, resilience, and the importance of family.
Margarete is survived by her daughter, Vivianne Bernston (Behr) of Mastic, NY, her son, George (Glen) Ackerman-Behr of Wakefield, MI, and her adored grandchildren: Eric (Karly) Moran of Ironwood, MI, Gabrielle (Jerry) Moran of Wakefield, MI, and Heidi Moran of Mastic, NY. Her legacy of love and kindness will endure in the hearts of her family and all those she touched.
The family will announce funeral or memorial service details later. In lieu of flowers, they encourage those wishing to honor Margarete's memory to donate to a charity of their choice.
Her memory will forever remain a source of comfort and love. May she rest in eternal peace.
