Obituary

GREEN BAY, Wis. - Lillian L. Suomi, of Green Bay, passed away at St. Vincent Hospital, on Friday, Sept. 27, 2024, after a brief stay. She had been a resident of Oak Park Place Assisted Living and Memory Care for the past three years. Lillian was born to George R. and Elsie E. (Toijala) Suomi on Jan. 22, 1935, in Bessemer Michigan. She was raised in Harding Location and lived across the road from her grandmother Toijala's farm.

Lillian attended local schools and graduated from A.D. Johnston High School in 1952. After high school, she moved to Green Bay and enrolled in business courses. Lillian then went to work for Wisconsin Public Service Corporation, retiring after 42 years in the human resources department.

Lillian was an avid golfer and skier in her younger years and was a regular swimmer at the Y into her 80s. She loved music and art, taking up painting in her retirement. Lillian was a member of the Northeast Wisconsin Watercolor Society. She also had an interest in geology, studying and collecting rock and mineral specimens from throughout the region.

Lillian was a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church in Green Bay. She will be sadly missed by family and friends. Always known as a person on the go reaching out to the people she loved.

Lillian is survived by her cousins, Maria Suomi, Mesick, Michigan, David Suomi, Sterling, Virginia, Gene Suomi, Ionia, Michigan, William (JoyAnn) Toijala, Cottage Grove, Wisconsin, Mary McWhorter, Silverado, California, and John (Linda) Toijala, Pelkie, Michigan; and other loving relatives.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 16, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10:30 a.m., at the Sharon Lutheran Church, 100 E. Sellar St., in Bessemer, with the Rev. Larry Lange officiating.

A committal service and interment will follow at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Bessemer.

Luncheon will be served at the Kastman Hall at the church immediately upon return from the cemetery.
