WAKEFIELD, Mich. – Laura D. Olson, 100, a lifelong resident of Wakefield, passed away early Saturday morning, Oct. 7, 2017, at Gogebic Medical Care Facility in Wakefield.

Laura was born on March 12, 1917, in Wakefield, a daughter of William Oscar and Linnea Marie (Torkko) Mackie. She attended Wakefield High School and graduated in 1935.

On April 25, 1941, Laura was united in marriage to Ralph P. Olson in Bessemer.

She was a member of All Saints Lutheran Church in Wakefield.

Laura worked as a nurse's aide at Gogebic Medical Care Facility for 17 years. She retired in 1979.

Laura is survived by three daughters, Jean (Buz) Burke, Ocala, Fla., Barb Suomi, Wakefield, and Margaret Olson (Rod Waara), Phillips, Wis.; her son-in-law, Stephen Matsumoto, Ojai, Calif.; five grandchildren, Jeff (Angie) Burke, Cable, Wis., Liz (Glenn) Reedy, Layton, Utah, John (Heather) Suomi, Kewadin, Chris (Jodie), Suomi, Green Bay, Wis., and Paul Suomi (Cali Mallos), Gypsum, Colo.; four great-grandchildren, Ryan and Rachel Reedy and Michael and Margaret Suomi; two brothers, Douglas Maki, Newtown, Conn., and Donald (Jeanette) Maki, Gwinn; a sister, Carolyn Ozzello, Livonia, N.Y.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Ralph, on April 26, 2000; a son at birth, Peter Michael, in 1941; a daughter, Lenore E. Olson, on Jan. 24, 1992; her son-in-law, Roger Suomi; two sisters, Verna Maki and Bernice Stenstrom; and four brothers, Earl, Bernhardt, Eugene and Lloyd Maki.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Oct. 13, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at All Saints Lutheran Church, 1202 Putnam St., in Wakefield, with the Rev. Bill Jacobson officiating.

A committal service and inurnment will take place in Lakeside Cemetery, Wakefield.
