IRONWOOD, Mich. — Larry A. Gerbig Sr., 73, of 707 Garvey Street, Ironwood, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2025, surrounded by his loving family, while hospitalized at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.
Larry was born on Feb. 11, 1952, in Milwaukee, son of the late Robert Gerbig Sr. (predeceased 2009) and Marylyn (Grayson) Gerbig (predeceased 1999). He was a graduate of Wakefield High School, Gogebic Community College and Basic Police School. Larry attended the Northern Michigan University corrections program. He served in the U.S. Army National Guard, and reserve of the army for six years, earning an honorable discharge as an E5 Specialist Fifth Class, Company B 107th Engineer Battalion Corps.
His years of employment covered a few types of work, including building garages with his dad, working at the White Pine Mine, as a police officer in Wakefield, an officer at the Marquette Juvenile Correctional Facility and working at Kinross Correctional Facility and Ojibway Correctional Facility.
He was married to Sherry Lynn Halberg on May 26, 1973, in Wakefield. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Larry (Jean) Gerbig Jr. of Woodville, Wisconsin, and Jason Gerbig of Somerset, Wisconsin; five grandchildren, AvaLyn Benyo of Ironwood, Luciana Lynn Gerbig of Somerset, and Addilyn, Callie and Benson Gerbig of Somerset; and two stepchildren, Tommy Udd of Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, Alaska, and Sadie Udd of Woodville.
Also surviving are two brothers, Robert (Patti) Gerbig Jr. of Lake Linden, and Dale (Valerie) Gerbig Sr. of Wakefield; sister, Gail Jarvela of Ironwood; sister-in-law, Bev (Robert) Ahonen of Wakefield; brother-in-law, Gary (Leone) Halberg of Marenisco; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his best dog buddy, Rocky, who walked five miles daily with him.
Besides his parents, Larry was preceded in death by a daughter, Jamie Lynn Gerbig, on Aug. 27, 2024; a brother, Dean Gerbig on May 26, 1987; and a sister, Carolyn Martinson of Schofield, Wisconsin, on May 17, 2019.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 17, at 4 p.m., preceded by a visitation at 3:30 p.m., at the Wakefield VFW with the Rev. Jeff Ahonen officiating. A meal will follow the service.
