RAMSAY, Mich. – Joanne T. “Ma S” Smith, 90, a long-time resident of Ramsay, passed away early Thursday morning, May 14, 2026, at Aspirus Ironwood Hospital, with her loving family by her side. She had resided at the Villa Maria Health and Rehabilitation Center in Hurley, Wisconsin for the past five years.

The former Joanne Dianich was born on Nov. 22, 1935, in Ramsay, daughter of the late Michael and Margaret (Bersano) Dianich. She attended A.D. Johnston High School in Bessemer and graduated in 1953.

Joanne was married to Gordon H. Smith on July 9, 1959, in Stillwater, Minnesota. They made their home in Ramsay and were blessed with two sons. One of her favorite pastimes was camping with her husband.

She was employed at the Gogebic Medical Care Facility in Wakefield for more than 17 years, and retired in 1990.

Joanne is survived by her husband, Gordon; two sons, Gordy (Laura), McGregor, Minnesota, and Greg (Lori) Ironwood; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, Bruce (Barb) Dianich, Hurley; and several nieces and nephews.

Out of respect for her wishes, cremation has taken place.

Private family graveside services will take place at Lakeview Cemetery in Saxon, Wisconsin. The Very Rev. Brian C. Gerber, pastor of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood, will officiate.

The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the staff of Villa Maria for their excellent care of Joanne during her time there.
