IRONWOOD, Mich. — James Theodore "Kilpy" Kilponen, suomalainen poika with sisu, was called to rest July 26, 2025, in Superior, Wisconsin, at age 90.
James was born on June 1, 1935, in Wakefield.
He was a faithful Lutheran and proud of his Finnish heritage.
James graduated from Wakefield High School in 1953. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, was discharged in 1958, and attended Michigan Tech via the G.I. Bill. He was self-employed with Finlandia Sauna & Fitness Equipment Co., building Finnish saunas, and also was a cartographer, lithographer, photographer and musician.
He was involved in Boy Scout Troop 101, American Legion, Indianhead Motorcycle Club, the first undefeated Wakefield Cardinal football team, Mississippi pipelines, All Saints Lutheran Church, National Finnish-American Festival, Little Finland Chorus, and The Northwind Band. He also enjoyed fishing.
James is survived by daughters, Taina and Trina; grandchildren, Joseph and Antonia; beloved sister, Gloria Rajala-Ovaska; Gary Ovaska, whom Jim considered a brother; and many dear cousins.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Vienna (Sippola) Kilponen; brother, Kenneth (Mary Ann); and brother-in-law, Ronald Rajala.
A private military service was held at Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood. Jerald Rocco is assisting the family.
