Obituary

BESSEMER, Mich. – James D. "Jim" Oja, 54, of Anvil Location, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, Jan. 3, 2019, at his home.

Jim was born on June 23, 1964, in Bessemer, a son of the late Wilbert and Betty (Johnson) Oja.

He attended Ironwood area schools graduating from Luther L. Wright High School in 1982.

After graduation, he enrolled at Gogebic Community College studying business and automotive technology.

After college, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He received his training and certifications at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. He went on to Rhein-Main, Germany and then to Travis Air Force Base in California.

After 11 years of active duty with an honorable discharge, Jim returned home to pursue his love of automotive mechanics.

He was employed at Bessemer Auto Company as a certified mechanic for many years until its closing.

He also continued his military service with the Air National Guard in Minnesota until 2005 and continued working on vehicles up until his time of death.

Jim was a hard worker, beloved brother and friend. He had a passion for cars, music, nature and the outdoors. He enjoyed many hobbies.

Surviving Jim are two daughters, Samantha (Ron) Green, Ironwood, and Britney (Jared) Williams, Lawton, Okla.; three grandchildren, Sophia Green, Zander Green and Shyla Williams; siblings, Judy (John) Taylor, Iola, Kan., Gary (Rose) Oja, Ironwood, Janine (Bernie) Basso, Ironwood, Robert Oja, Ironwood, Cheryl (Jeffrey) Elias, Bessemer and Kenneth (Mary Game) Oja, Ironwood; and numerous aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Cremation will take place.

A memorial service will be held in June, with military rites, at Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood.

Date and time will be announced prior to service.
