Jack E. Hautala, 80, a resident of Bessemer, formerly of Ironwood Township, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010, in Ironwood.
Jack was born on Oct. 18, 1930, in Ironwood Township, the son of Nestor Henry and Hilma Johanna (Nujala) Hautala. He was a first generation Finnish- American and was very proud of his Finnish heritage.
Jack graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in Ironwood in 1949.
He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War.
On Dec. 1, 1956, Jack was united in marriage to Shirley M. Lassila at Zion Lutheran Church in Ironwood by the Rev. A.L. Maki.
For the last 13 years, he and his wife enjoyed wintering in Zephyrhills, Fla.
Jack was the founder of Hautala Distributing Co., Inc.
His memberships included the Michigan Beer and Wine Wholesalers Association, All Saints Lutheran Church in Wakefield and the Wakefield American Legion Post 11.
Jack is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley; five children, Jeffrey (Roberta) and Jock (Julie), both of Wakefield, Michael (Patricia), Ramsay, Beth (Rolf) Hendrickson, Elizabethtown, Ky., and Peggy (Frank) Austin, Gladstone; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; a sister, Irene (Donald) Mildren, Ironwood; two sisters-in-law, Geraldine Hautala, Ironwood, and Eileen Prosser, Oceanside, Calif.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Arnold, Raymond "Gramps" and Erwin.
The family will greet relatives and friends on Saturday, Dec. 11, from 9 to 11 a.m., at All Saints Lutheran Church, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Bill Jacobson officiating.
A reception will be held in the church fellowship hall following the service.
Pallbearers will be Jack's grandsons.
Interment will take place in the spring at Hillcrest Cemetery.
