Hugo 'Ray'
Bastman
May 26, 1951 – November 19, 2025
IRONWOOD, Mich. - Hugo "Ray" Bastman, 74, of Ironwood, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2025, with his loving family at his side.
Ray was born on May 26, 1951, in Ironwood, a son of Hugo K. and Joanne (Polvi) Bastman. He attended Luther L. Wright High School and graduated in 1969.
On Aug. 25, 1973, Ray married the love of his life, Debra Trombley. They spent 52 beautiful years together, building a wonderful life and loving family.
Ray proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1970-1972, and spent the next 18 years in the Michigan National Guard. Following his honorable discharge, he returned home and earned his associate degree from Gogebic Community College and a degree in corrections at Northern Michigan University.
Ray worked as an Ironwood police officer and as a corrections officer for the State of Michigan Department of Corrections for 30 years.
He was a lifelong Vikings fan and loved playing baseball from the time he was a kid, playing on many local baseball teams (Go Rigoni's!). One of many great joys was playing golf with his wife as his partner, although he wasn't too happy when she beat him (which was frequently).
Ray is survived by his wife, Debbie; three children, Keith (Jaime) Bastman, Virginia Beach, Virginia, Amy (Andy) Tait, Hurley, Wisconsin, and Carrie (Korey) Jazdzewski, Superior, Wisconsin; nine grandchildren, Jillian (Parker) Wilson, Audrey Bastman (and Cole), Madelyn Bastman, Brianne Bastman, Brady (Jessica) Tait, Morgan Leinon (and Alex), Paigie May (and Emily), Ryder Colassaco and Jenna Jazdzewski; and two beautiful great-grandchildren, Ari Bastman and Wren Wilson. Ray is also survived by a brother, Rick Bastman; a sister, Renee (Mike) Palmgren; his brother-in-law, Dave (Joy) Trombley; and many beloved nieces, nephews and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents; a brother and sister-in-law, Ron and Fay Polvi; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ray and Lorraine (Oie) Trombley; and other various family members with whom he spent childhood and adulthood and loved deeply.
Ray, who was a husband, dad, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend, was so loved and will be missed by all of us.
As per his wishes, there will be no funeral; however, a Celebration of Life will occur next summer.
Please remember him when you watch a Vikings game as they try to beat the Packers, or go enjoy a round of golf.
