Herta 'Mutti' Liedtke
WAKEFIELD, Mich. – Herta "Mutti" Liedtke, 91, of Bessemer, passed away Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011, at the Gogebic Medical Care Facility in Wakefield, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on Jan. 9, 1920, in Danzig, Germany, the daughter of Paul and Margaret Schulz. Herta attended school in Germany.
On March 4, 1939, she married Erich "Pappi" Liedtke, in Germany.
In 1957, the family came to America and made their home in Bessemer.
Herta excelled in German cuisine and was known for her delicious tortes. Anyone visiting her home would never leave hungry.
Mutti and Pappi loved music, played the mouth organ and enjoyed dancing tangos and waltzes.
Her hobbies included knitting and crocheting.
Herta is survived by two daughters, Inga (Niles) Sanders and Karin (James) Cebolski, both of Bessemer; her son-in-law, James Chernak, Hoffman Estates, Ill.; nine grandchildren, Detlef, Ted, Mike, Tanya, Linda, Scott, Kristin, Gene and Sonya; numerous great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Doris Pinkalla, in Germany; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband of 60 years, Erich, on March 15, 1999; a daughter, Gisela "Gigi" Chernak, on Dec. 31, 2010; a granddaughter, Lori Cebolski, on April 21, 1973; and 16 brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be private.
