Helen Josephine Allen's Obituary
WAKEFIELD, Mich. – Helen Josephine Allen, 91, of Wakefield, formerly of Black River Harbor, Ironwood Township, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012, at her home.
She was born on Aug. 25, 1921, in Dollar Bay, a daughter of the late Emil and Lempi (Jarvi) Sorvala. Helen was a 1939 graduate of Jeffers High School in Painesdale.
On Oct. 6, 1939, she married Irving Hukkala in Chicago. He preceded her in death on Nov. 9, 1984.
On Oct. 12, 1985, Helen married Douglas Matthew Allen in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. He preceded her in death on May 31, 2012.
She was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ramsay and the National Finnish American Society, as well as a friend of Little Finland.
Helen and Doug wintered in Florida, Arizona and, for the most recent years, in Texas where they loved dancing and taught many friends to dance.
Helen loved watching the birds and butterflies. She enjoyed skiing, playing the piano, singing, picking raspberries and doing crafts.
Helen is survived by three grandchildren, Curtis Besand, Los Angeles, Caren Gilliland, Spokane, Wash., and Cherie (Russ) Hoffman, Acton, Calif.; three stepchildren, Douglas "Dobi" (Kathleen) Allen, Streamwood, Ill., Claudia (Robert) Frahm, Athens, Wis., and Diane (Terry) Livingston, Rock Springs, Wyo.; 10 great-grandchildren; numerous other grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; her brother-in-law, Lindy Allen, Bessemer; her sister-in-law, Katherine Trappa, Bessemer; many loving nieces and nephews, whom she was like a mother to; and her "special angel on earth," Carol

Besides her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Daune "Dee" Mathena, on Sept. 5, 2008.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 3, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ramsay, with the Rev. Wesley "Bo" Baumeister officiating.
A reception will be held in the church fellowship hall following the service.
A private burial will take place in South Range Cemetery.
