BESSEMER, Mich. – Gladys DeRosie, 96, born and raised in Bessemer, passed away peacefully early Thursday morning, April 16, 2026, at Sky View Nursing Center in Hurley, Wisconsin.
The former Gladys Nyman was born May 16, 1929, daughter of the late Alfred and Anna (Marander) Nyman. She graduated from the A.D. Johnston High School with the class of 1947.
In 1949, Gladys was married to Donald DeRosie and they celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary before his passing.
While raising her family, she worked at home coloring portraits for Kenny's Studio and several studios from out of town, until colored film was developed replacing hand-colored portraits.
In 1970, Gladys was employed at Grand View Hospital working her way up to becoming director of the medical records department.
She was a lifelong member of Sharon Lutheran Church and was the organist there for many years.
Gladys and Donald had a love for dogs. They had numerous hunting hounds, a Pekingese, an Afghan Hound, a golden retriever which was gifted to them for their 50th wedding anniversary by their children, named Golden Anne – "Goldie" and most recently a yellow lab, Rudy Lou. Also her grand-dog, Remington, who she adored and spoiled.
Gladys is survived by a son, Todd (Peggy Jo) DeRosie; a daughter, Julie DeRosie; three grandchildren, Reid DeRosie, Korina Ebel and Sophie Halverson; and three great-grandchildren, Hudson, Leighton and Mason Ebel.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by numerous siblings; and a daughter, Diane Halverson.
As per her wishes, cremation has taken place.
A private family interment will be held at the Hillcrest Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the staff at Sky View Nursing Center for their exceptional care of mom over the past few years.
