George D. Miheve, 89, of Wakefield, passed away Friday morning, May 13, 2011, at the Gogebic Medical Care Facility in Wakefield.
He was born on May 25, 1921, in Wakefield, son of the late Joseph and Anna (Malovrh) Miheve. George graduated from Wakefield High School in 1939.
He proudly served in the U.S. Army from Sept. 27, 1940, to Oct. 17, 1945. George received several decorations and citations and was honorably discharged.
On July 5, 1952, he was united in marriage with Dorothy J. Perkovich, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Ironwood. She preceded him in death on Jan. 26, 1989.
On May 15, 1993, George married Elaine McCoppin in Houston, Texas. She preceded him in death on March 28, 2009.
His memberships included the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Wakefield and the Wakefield Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9084.
George loved the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing and was an excellent baseball player.
George worked in the office at Sunday Lake Mine and White Pine Copper.
He is survived by a daughter, Michele' (John) Stilson, Gurnee, Ill.; a son, Michael, Mercer, Wis.; three grandchildren, Manda Stilson, Melanie Stilson and Danielle Miheve; a sister, Stephanie Bria, Okemos; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and wives, George was preceded in death by a son, Mark, on April 25, 1978; and five brothers, Joseph, John (Jack), Frank, Vincent and Lawrence.
The family will greet relatives and friends on Thursday, May 19, from 10 to 11 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the honor guard beginning at 10:15 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow the visitation at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Joy J. Adimakkeel as celebrant.
Rite of Committal and burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery with a military graveside service under the auspices of the Wakefield American Legion Post 11 and the Wakefield VFW Post 9084.
