WAKEFIELD, Mich. – Eino M. Kauranen, 87, a longtime resident of Wakefield, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, in Wakefield, with his loving daughter by his side.
He was born on June 5, 1925, in Brantwood, Wis., the son of John and Aliina (Jackson) Kauranen.
Eino proudly served his country with the U.S. Army during World War II.
On March 13, 1948, he was united in marriage to Martha H. Waataja at the parsonage at First Lutheran Church in Wakefield, by the late Rev. S.V. Autere.
His love of and enthusiasm for the outdoors with his wife was well known. Together, they enjoyed fishing, hunting and trapping.
Eino was an active member of All Saints Lutheran Church and its men's group until Martha went into the nursing home. He then faithfully cared for his wife until her passing. Eino was a life member of the Wakefield Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9084. He served on the board of directors at the Wakefield Co-Op Super Market, and for a short time on the Wakefield City Council.
Eino worked at the Sunday Lake Mine until its closure, and then was employed by and retired from White Pine Copper Co.
Eino is survived by a daughter, Linda Johnson, Ironwood; a son, Tracy, lower Michigan; his son-in-law, Doug Storms, St. Mary's Point, Minn.; three grandchildren, Shelly (Tom) Koithan, Gary (Jennifer) Tervo and Michael Tervo; two great-grandchildren, Emily and Erin Koithan; three sisters-in-law, Nancy Forchette, Wakefield, Bertha Aldrich, Altamonte Springs, Fla., and Pearl Horvath, Lake Gogebic; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Martha, on Feb. 7, 2010; his daughter, Bobbie Jean Storms, on Oct. 3, 2009; two brothers, John and Eugene; and three sisters, Bertha Kauranen, Martha Pearce and Marian Vuorenmaa.
A funeral service will be held at a later date.
Burial will take place at Lakeside Cemetery, Wakefield.
