Obituary

IRONWOOD, Mich. – Edith Raisanen, 102, a longtime resident of Wakefield, passed away peacefully Friday evening, Oct. 14, 2011, in Ironwood.

She was born on Aug. 13, 1909, in Jyvaskyla, Finland, the daughter of Oscar and Lyyli (Laukkanen) Niemi. Edith and her family immigrated to the United States of America through Ellis Island in 1920 and made their home in Wakefield. She graduated from Wakefield High School in 1930.

On March 15, 1934, Edith married Isaac Raisanen, in Ironwood.

She worked as a nurse's aide at the Gogebic Medical Care Facility in Wakefield, was a member of All Saints Lutheran Church, and loved to read, knit and work jigsaw puzzles.

The memory of Edith will never be lost to those who were lucky enough to know her.

She is survived by two sons, Wally (Martha), Harriman, Tenn., and Carl, Menasha, Wis.; a daughter, Doris (Carl) Swenson, Jackson; two daughters-in-law, Gayle Raisanen, Sodus, N.Y., and Karen Raisanen, Marenisco; 12 grandchildren, Wendy (David Bradley) Raisanen, Carol (Clint) Vardeman, Eric (Lynn) Raisanen, David (Wendy) Swenson, Brian (Wanda) Swenson, Alan Dale Raisanen, Debbie (Jay) Meyer, Rick (Tina) Raisanen, Christine Raisanen, Deanna (Ronnie) Killen, J.D. Raisanen and Shannon Raisanen; five great-grandchildren, Samantha, Lauren, Michael, Cameron and Madisyn; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Isaac, on April 6, 1991; three sons, David, in 1947, Alan, in 2005, and Robert, in 2009; and two brothers, Bill and Paul Niemi.

Friends may call at the Lakeside Memorial Chapel in Wakefield this evening, Monday, Oct. 17, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Visitation will continue on Tuesday, Oct. 18, from 10 to 11 a.m., at All Saints Lutheran Church in Wakefield, where a funeral service will follow at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Bill Jacobson officiating.


Pallbearers will be her grandchildren.

Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery.
