IRONWOOD, Mich. – Carole Mae Skovera, 84, a longtime resident of Ironwood, passed away at home, Sunday evening, Sept. 27, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.

Carole was born to Thomas and Sophie (Viste) Larson on Jan. 31, 1942. She was the ninth of 10 children all born at the family farmhouse in rural Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. She attended the Hainesville Grade School and graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School with the class of 1960.

Carole married Russell Skovera on Nov. 30, 1963. Once Russ was discharged from the U.S. Coast Guard, they relocated to Ironwood, where she lived out the rest of her life. Carole was an avid reader and knitter. She worked year-round making slippers for all her children, grandchildren and special friends for Christmas. If you ever received a pair, you were a special part of Carole’s world.

Carole is survived by her husband of nearly 63 years, Russell; three children, Russell (Theresa), Rebecca Pontes and Roberta (Jon) Munn; four siblings, Ardyce (Don) Lauscher, Pete (Marlene) Larson, Rodger Larson and Marie Weber; nine grandchildren, Laura Skovera, Michael (Lauren) Skovera, Tyler Skovera, Anthony, Jacob and Cameron Pontes, Michaela (Austin) Lash, and Kaitlyn and Eli Munn; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death her parents; four brothers and their wives, Orville (Karen), Millard (Marie), Howard (Ruby) and Gerald (Pat); a sister, Sylvia (Larry and Al); two sisters-in-law, Sandi and Judy: her brother-in-law, Ron; and her son-in-law, Dave Pontes.

At her request, cremation has taken place.

A Celebration of Carole’s Life will be held at a later date, with the date and time to be announced.
