Bertha S. Johns, 77, a longtime resident of Wakefield, passed away peacefully Friday, March 11, 2011, in Ironwood.
She was born April 28, 1933, in Bruce Crossing, daughter of the late Charles and Anna (Anderson) Mikkola.
On Aug. 12, 1950, Bertha married Kenneth Roy Johns in Wakefield. He preceded her in death on Dec. 4, 2006.
Bertha was an active member of All Saints Lutheran Church in Wakefield and sang in the choir. She was involved in WELCA, Joy Circle, taught Sunday school, and was very generous with her time serving in the church kitchen. Bertha also sang in the National Finnish- American Festival Chorus.
She had many hobbies including weaving rag rugs, knitting, sewing, quilting, canning vegetables and flower gardening. Bertha loved to cook and bake and no one ever left her home hungry.
Surviving are three sons, Stanley (Diana), Baraga, Dale, Kapalei, Hawaii, and Clifford Mark (Laurel), Wakefield; two daughters, Leah (Ken) Nikula, Ironwood, and Heidi Johns, Wheaton, Ill.; five grandchildren, Amber (Aaron), Leanna, Benjamin (Chelsea), Joshua and Nathan; a great-granddaughter, Claire; a brother, Richard Mikkola, Wakefield; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a host of friends.
Besides her parents and husband, Bertha was preceded in death by her siblings, Edith Krook, Leonard Mikkola, Margaret Redmon, Elaine Litwicki and Katherine Hocking.
The family will greet relatives and friends on Tuesday, March 15, from 10 to 11 a.m., at All Saints Lutheran Church, where funeral services will follow at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Bill Jacobson officiating.
A reception will be held in the church fellowship hall following the service.
Interment will take place in the spring in the family plot at Lakeside
Cemetery.
