Obituary

BESSEMER, Mich. – Barbara Ann Polkus, 82, of Bessemer, passed away peacefully Thursday afternoon, July 2, 2015, at Aspirus Grand View Hospital surrounded by the love of her immediate family.

Barbara was born on April 10, 1933, in Houghton, the daughter of John and Mabel (Gregory) Croze. She grew up in Houghton, and met her future husband there while he attended Michigan Technological University. They were married a week before his graduation on May 23, 1953, at St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Bessemer. Shortly after they moved to the Detroit area to raise their family and after 38 years retired in Bessemer.

She was a member of St. Sebastian Catholic Church and a former member of St. John Bosco Catholic Church in Redford.

During her retirement, Barbara enjoyed gardening, bird watching and walking with Vince. She was very active with numerous church activities such as the Ladies Guild and pasty fundraising.

Barbara was a devoted fun-loving spouse, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend to all.

She is survived by her beloved husband and best friend, Vincent L.; four sons, Vincent S. (Laura), Delafield, Wis., John, Bessemer, Terry (Kathy), Dearborn Heights, and Robert, Redford; three grandchildren, VJ (Leah), Lindstrom, Minn., Gregory (Jenna), Delafield, and Laura, San Francisco; four great-grandchildren, Natalie Jane, Vincent Edward, Lillian Ruth and Oliver Edwin; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Mortimer Croze, in 1956.


Cremation has already taken place.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, July 6, at noon, preceded by visitation at 11 a.m., at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, with the Rev. Antony Lukka, celebrant.

Rite of Committal and interment will take place at Hillcrest Cemetery, Bessemer.

Lunch will be served at Father Swoboda Hall following the cemetery service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Sebastian Youth Group, 210 E. Iron St., Bessemer MI 49911.
