Alida Joan
'Lidy' Rimkus
June 21, 1943 – August 11, 2025
IRONWOOD, Mich. - Alida Joan "Lidy" Rimkus, age 82, a long-time resident of Ironwood, passed away on Monday, Aug. 11, 2025, at Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, Minnesota, with her loving family at her side.
Lidy was born in Marenisco, on June 21, 1943, to Charles "Boots" and Delphia Mae (Beals) Plumley. She was one of nine children. She attended Marenisco School and resided there until she married Francis Joseph "Frank" Rimkus in 1964. Together they raised their three children, Donna, Joe and Mike in Ironwood. Although they later divorced, they remained close friends until his death in 2021.
Lidy had a few different jobs, but they always involved her caring for others. Her favorite job, without a doubt though, was being a Grandma and a Nana. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren meant the world to her, and she loved to spoil them any chance she could. "No" was not a response they heard from her often.
To know Lidy meant you'd always get an honest "no-filter" response. She was quick-witted and could always make you laugh with her sarcastic comments and jokes.
Lidy spent a lot of time in the kitchen cooking and baking. You were lucky if you got to try her fried chicken dinner, Swiss steak or cinnamon rolls.
Lidy spent many of her younger years playing in card leagues and would still play solitaire at her dining table. She also loved animals, especially her dogs, Keeta and Lily, who hopefully greeted her in Heaven with a big wet kiss.
Lidy was very strong in her faith and an active member of Woodland Church in Ironwood, where she enjoyed worshiping, helping with communion and participating in many church activities.
Surviving are her children, Donna LaChapelle, Joseph (Marissa) and Michael (Karin), all of Ironwood; eight grandchildren, Kristin (Kyle) Anderson, Cloquet, Minnesota, Nick (Gabriella) Hellen, Live Oak, Texas, Breanna LaChapelle, Roseville, Minnesota, and Jacqualyn LaChapelle, Lacey (Dominic) Cutino, Austin Rimkus, Amanda (Nathan) Magdziak and Nicole (Chris) Rimkus, all of Ironwood; five great-grandchildren, Aidan, Connor and Everly Anderson, Landon Magdziak and River Hellen; special friend, Pam Culkin; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Besides her parents and Frank, she was preceded in death by all her siblings, Donald, Lyle, Earl, William, Maitland, Pauline Smith, Gladys Kummer and Wilmajane; a son, Ricky St. John; a grandson, Brian Hellen; and her son-in-law, John LaChapelle.
Out of respect for Lidy's wishes, cremation has taken place.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, Aug. 29, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at Woodland Church, N10234 Curry Road, in Ironwood, with Pastor Gary Harrison officiating. A private interment will be held at a later date.
The family would like to thank the staff of Westgate Nursing, Rehabilitation and Assisted Living Community for the care, love and patience they showed to Lidy over the last year.
Arrangements are entrusted to Jerald Rocco, Lakeside Memorial Chapel Inc., in Wakefield. Condolences may be expressed online at lakesidememorialchapel.com
