Obituary

BRUCE CROSSING, Mich. – Alexander Maketeonas Metas Sr., 87, of Bruce Crossing, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2024, in Duluth, Minnesota, with his family at his side.

Alexander was born on Feb. 22, 1937, in Paynesville, a son of Thomas John and Jennie (A.) Metas. He attended school in Trout Creek.

On Aug. 7, 1965, Alexander was united in marriage to Brenda Joyce Sloma at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Bruce Crossing.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed attending sporting events.

Alexander retired from White Pine Copper Range after 34 years of dedicated service.

Alexander is survived by his loving wife, Brenda; three daughters, Melanie (Steve) Gerber, Bruce Crossing, Sheila (John) Cottenham, St. Ignace, and Tara (Rich) Pallin, Watersmeet; a son, Alexander Jr. (Tracy), Bessemer; 10 grandchildren, Courtney (Dylan) Smith, Swartz Creek, Melissa (Benjamin) Klein, Grand Rapids, Tyler Gerber, Watersmeet, John (Jen) Cottenham, St. Ignace, Andrew Metas, and Allyson Metas, both of Grand Rapids, Anthony Metas, Bessemer, and Hailey Pallin, Kiona Pallin and Julia Pallin, all of Watersmeet; three great-grandchildren, Amelia and Ronan Smith, Swartz Creek, and Guinevere Klein, Grand Rapids; a sister, Sylvia Sain, Marquette; a brother, Thomas, Milwaukee; numerous nieces and nephews; and other loving relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers and two sisters-in-law, John, Jim (Beverly), George and Robert, and Cis Metas; and five sisters and six brothers-in-law, Katherine (William) Moilanen, Mary (Thomas) Dezur, Effie (Oscar) Ivio, Jennie (Robert) Koski, Dorothy Metas (LeRoy) and Harold Samuel Sain.

The family requests outdoor sporting attire or any of your favorite sport's teams.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, Sept. 13, at 2 p.m., EDT, preceded by visitation at 1 p.m. EDT, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ewen. The Rev. Brian Gerber will officiate.

A committal service and interment will take place at the Agate Cemetery.
